Fieldcraft Studios was commissioned by Cefas to produce a series of ten careers films that captured the breadth and impact of their world-class marine science.
The project involved filming at Cefas sites in Weymouth, Lowestoft, and on board the RV Endeavour, with the aim of engaging students from GCSE age and above. The objective was to highlight the diverse career opportunities within marine science and to challenge the perception that all scientific roles require a PhD.
Working in close collaboration with the Cefas communications and science teams, we developed a detailed production schedule to ensure comprehensive coverage across all locations. The films included interviews with scientists, drone footage, and close-up sequences of science in action – from lab-based research to fieldwork on the vessel. Capturing both the human stories and the technical work at the heart of Cefas’s mission was central to our approach.
The outcome was a dynamic and visually engaging film series that showcased the people, passion, and science driving Cefas’s contribution to marine sustainability.
Each film served not only as a career insight tool but also as a celebration of the organisation’s dedication to evidence-based science and environmental stewardship.
Capturing the People Behind the Science: World-Class Interviewing with Heart and Clarity
With our background in journalism, we excel at interviewing. We understand how to ask the right questions, guide the conversation, and uncover insight that goes beyond rehearsed soundbites.
This is especially important when working with scientists, engineers and technical experts who may not feel naturally comfortable in front of the camera.
Our team creates a safe, supportive and encouraging environment for interviewees, helping them to feel at ease and confident in telling their story. We offer light coaching throughout the process and adapt our style to suit the individual, ensuring every interview is both relaxed and impactful.
This approach consistently results in world-class interviews that hit all the key messaging points while also feeling authentic and emotionally resonant. We pride ourselves on our ability to capture not just what people do, but why it matters — an essential ingredient in powerful science communication
Telling the Story of Science: Cinematic Storytelling that Connects People to Purpose
This film series is a strong example of our ability to craft compelling visual narratives that bring science to life. Through thoughtful storytelling and carefully composed cinematography, we take the audience beyond surface-level explanation and into the real, human experience behind the science.
Bringing Science to Life with Broadcast-Quality Animation and On-Brand Visuals
Working closely with our animator, we developed a distinctive visual style using the existing branding kit created by the Cefas education team.
This included an engaging and impactful animated intro sequence, along with a series of on-brand graphic transitions and ‘wipes’. These creative elements added polish and consistency to the final output, helping to capture the attention of the target demographic and make the content feel current, vibrant and professional.
It is this level of visual storytelling that truly elevated the content, ensuring it not only delivered educational value but also matched the high standards of the science it set out to communicate. With all of this expertise in-house, we are able to produce content that reflects the quality and ambition of our clients’ work.
“Working with Liz, Dave, and their team was an absolute pleasure. From the very beginning, their organisation of the project was fantastic, ensuring everything ran smoothly and efficiently. They took the time to thoroughly understand the brief and consistently revisited it throughout the project, resulting in an end product that is perfectly pitched for our target audience.
Through their excellent story-telling skills they brought the roles to life in a way that was both authentic and compelling, producing videos with genuine warmth whilst staying true to consistent messaging throughout.
Their dedication and attention to detail were second to none, and it was clear that they were passionate about delivering high-quality work. We are incredibly grateful for all their hard work and the outstanding results they achieved.” Natalie Barrat, Education Lead, Cefas
