The story behind the science
There’s something fascinating about the way we understand science. Often we can think of it as data points and research papers, as equations and measurements. But the real power of science lies not in the numbers, but in the stories we tell about them.
Cefas, the Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science, has spent decades tackling some of the most urgent global challenges—climate change, biodiversity loss, food security. Their work is vital. But like many great institutions, they faced a challenge: How do you make complex, technical research feel real? How do you make people care?
Seeing is believing
That’s where we came in. Cefas commissioned us to create a photography library—an archive of images capturing their scientists in action, their technology at work, their research unfolding in real-time. The goal? To translate science into something tangible, something visual.
Over the course of the project, we travelled between Cefas’s labs and research vessel, documenting their cutting-edge work. The logistics were intense. Different locations, strict lab protocols, shifting schedules. But in the end, the result was worth it — a stunning, versatile collection of images that show, rather than tell, the story of science.

The hidden return on investment of a Content Library
There’s an unexpected benefit to this kind of investment. A powerful content library isn’t just about having great visuals—it’s about efficiency. Now, when Cefas teams need an image for an annual report, a social media post, or an outreach event, they don’t have to scramble. They have instant access to compelling, professional imagery that elevates their messaging. The return on investment? Enormous.

Why this matters
In the end, this project was about more than just photography. It was about shifting the way we communicate science. Because when you can see the work, when you can feel the energy behind it, it stops being an abstract concept. It becomes real. And that’s when people start to care.
