Producing 360 films on an expedition with Ranulph Fiennes
Join us behind the scenes in Antarctica base camp and watch our 360 films.
David Carter, our co-founder and chief cameraman, has spent the last three years flying around the world with legendary explorer Sir Ranulph Fiennes filming his latest record-beating attempt, The Global Reach Challenge.
We’ve been filming in Antarctica, Russia, West Papua, Argentina and Alaska. It’s been epic!
Behind the scenes in Antarctica base camp – watch our 360 films
Throughout the challenge, we’ve been experimenting with 360 cameras and have made a series of short films that will give you an intimate insight into what life is like on an expedition.
They are shot on a basic Theta S camera. We chose this camera as it is light enough to carry – a necessity when you are carrying everything – including our high-quality broadcast camera kit.
Walk to the summit with us
In this first 360 film, filmed in Antarctica, the camera is mounted on the sledge.
You’ll join the team as they are walking towards the summit of the highest mountain in Antarctica, Mount Vinson.
The temperature is about around -20°C and the altitude around 3,000 metres above sea level.
You’ll see David and mountain guide, Scott, walking quickly past the rest of the team in order to get into a good position to then film as Ranulph Fiennes catches them up.
David is at the front and Scott at the back and about half-way through the film you’ll see them passing Ranulph Fiennes.
In Antarctica, teams walk slowly in single file roped together for safety. If one team member falls down a crevasse then the other can pull them up to safety.

Join us for dinner in the cook tent
Come and join us inside the cook tent and watch as the team melt snow for drinking water.
A raging storm has been brewing trapping the team at Camp 1 for 5 days.
As the wind picks up it nearly blows the tent away. Watch as the team battle to secure the tent down. If you listen you can hear and see just how strong the wind is.

Grab your bike and let’s take a ride around Antarctica base camp
Join David as he cycles around taking you behind the scenes in Antarctica base camp. It’s a fascinating insight into life on the coldest continent.
You can see the lines of tents, mess tents, diggers and aeroplanes.
Remember that every piece of equipment you see as you tour around the camp has been flown in!

We’re on the summit
Join us as Ranulph Fiennes takes his final steps onto the summit of Mount Vinson, the highest mountain in Antarctica.
An incredible achievement.
His exhaustion is evident as he moves slowly, step by step, onto the summit.
As you scroll around the image you can also see David capturing the moment on camera.
The view is awe-inspiring. Teams that reached the summit earlier in the day did so under clouds but as Ranulph, David and the team approach the summit the clouds lifted giving this incredible view.
