VSO (Voluntary Services Overseas) commissioned us to produce a series of content for their Christmas fundraising campaign.
They wanted to connect their audience with the work of Gerieke Zandberg, a VSO volunteer paediatric nurse from the Netherlands working to save babies’ lives at Gulu Hospital, Uganda.
Using classic storytelling and reporting techniques we are going to be producing a weekly diary that follows the highs and lows of Gerieke’s week.
But with a twist!
Nurses from the labour ward came running in. They were carrying a baby and screaming, ‘This baby needs oxygen.’

Remote Reportage
As stable communication with Uganda is challenging we are going to be using WhatsApp to interview Gerieke every week.
We’ll pick the most compelling story, record the audio using WhatsApp and finally animate the story in a striking black and white style.
The idea is to create content that will arrest the audiences’ attention whilst they scroll through a very busy Facebook timeline.
The campaign launches with a dramatic story of how Gerieke saved a baby’s life against the odds.
